During this hands-on training, a short introduction was given on the Unitary Patent, unitary effect and what the consequences are if you opt in (or if you don’t). Further, the forms which could be used relating to the Unitary Patent, what kind of information you need from your clients to be able to correctly prepare and submit the request, and how to solve issues in case of a problem have been discussed. Finally, the calculation of due dates relating to annuity fees have been explained.

In this recording presentation Peter Thomsen and Bart van Wezenbeek highlight the practical issues of communicating with the UPC Case Management System (CMS) and how to request an opt-out.

The seminar provides knowledge of unitary patent protection and the Unified Patent Court (UPC) to allow epi members to work with the new system and to advise clients on strategic choices, for example on whether to request unitary effect for their European patents, or when and whether to opt their non-unitary European patents out of the UPC. This seminar is held jointly with the EPO, with expert speakers from both the epi and the EPO.
